I grew up reading fairytales illustrated by Rudolf Koivu (1890 – 1946). My favorites were of course the ones with beautiful princesses. If there weren’t any, I would skip the whole story. We had a bunch of his books when I was a kid, but no one seems to know what happened to them. That’s why during the holidays I treated myself to a collection of stories illustrated by him, Rudolf Koivun satuja ja tarinoita.

Rudolf Koivu wanted to become a painter, but financial reasons drove him to illustrate. Although very productive, he was never well-off. I guess like many other artists, he wasn’t very good with his finances :)

I like most the illustrations with a restricted color palette, red and blue. The style was due to economic reasons, two colors were cheaper to print. Later on he was able to use full color scale, and although the colors are gorgeous, I still find myself more drawn to the frugal style.

But my favorites are still the ones with beautiful princesses. I mean look at those dresses!
