Rockin’ classics: Eames RAR

For the longest time I’ve dreamed of the Tapiovaara Mademoiselle rocking chair. But it seems I just have to keep on dreaming. Now it turns out we actually need a rocking chair, for nursing. But Mademoiselle, as pretty as she is, doesn’t make the cut. She lacks the much needed armrests.
But not to worry, there’s another rockin’ classic that is as good, if not better for our home. I’m talking about the Eames RAR rocker. It has the armrests and it’s really quite small. Which is great for the limited space we have.
It comes in many beautiful colors but, after much debate, white won. Only because our house is already so colorful, this way it fits in more rooms than just one.

Olen haaveillut pitkään Tapiovaaran Mademoiselle-keinutuolista. Näyttää siltä, että saan jatkaa haaveilua. Vauvan myötä nimittäin oikeasti tarvimme keinutuolia. Mutta niin kaunis kuin Mademoiselle onkin, se ei ole meille Se Oikea. Siitä puuttuvat käsinojat. Niinpä olen kääntynyt toisen klassikon puoleen. Se on meille paljon passelimpi, koska käsinojien lisäksi se on sopivan pikkuinen. Puhun siis Eamesin RAR-keinutuolista. Siitä on monta herkkua värivaihtoehtoa, mutta meidän tapauksessa valkoinen taitaa yllättäen olla paras. Sopii sitten useampaan huoneeseen.
Oikeastaan mitä enemmän katselen RARia, sitä enemmän siitä tykkään. Vai mitä mieltä olette?
Wee bits of Christmas

Thank you so much for your sweet comments on our news! It’s been so nice to read them, can’t help but smile. We have spent our days with the baby, taking naps when we can. As you can imagine, we haven’t put much effort into Christmas preparations.
But I don’t think you need that much to get into the right spirit. Just some lights, candles, pipari (Finnish gingerbread cookies) and glögi (gluhwein). And of course loads of chocolate! What are your plans?

Meillä päivät on sujuneet vaavin kanssa puuhatessa ja päiväunia nukkuessa. Jouluvalmisteluihin ei juuri ole paneuduttu. Eipä sitä varmaan paljon vaaditakaan että pääsee joulutunnelmaan. Vähän valoja, kynttilöitä, pipareita ja glögiä. Niin ja huimat määrät suklaata! Mitä suunnitelmia teillä on?

It’s a boy!

Our baby is three weeks old! He decided to come into the world a bit early, two weeks before the due date. Which is good, because he was already a big boy. Now we have been learning a new life with him. He’s so sweet, a little miracle.

Meidän pikkumiehemme on kolme viikkoa vanha! Hän päätti tulla maailmaan pari viikkoa etuajassa. Se olikin hyvä juttu, sillä hän oli jo iso poika. Nyt päivät kuluvat vauvan tahtiin, uutta elämää ihmetellessä.
3 weeks to go

Only 3 weeks left til the due date, and lots of things happening. I was interviewed for Vauva (Finnish for baby) magazine last weekend. Thank you Titta and Teija! It was fun, but boy, was it hard work posing for the photos! I feel much more comfortable on the other side of the camera.
Our kitchen is getting there. There’s still little things left to do, like shelves and moldings, but we have already started moving our stuff there. I think we’ll try to squeeze in one more room to fix before the big day. Fingers crossed!
It was also time for the old oil heating to go. Our heating system was from 1979, so you can imagine its days of glory were far gone. The new system uses geothermal heat. They drilled a 180 m (600 ft) deep hole in our front lawn last week. It was a big muddy mess, lucky I hadn’t done any gardening there yet.
I feel really happy that with geothermal heating our house is much more eco-friendly. Especiallly since we switched our electricity to environmentally friendly Ekosähkö a while back. No nuclear power to our house, thank you.
And finally, there’s first snow! Looks like autumn is over and winter is on its way.

Enää kolme viikkoa laskettuun aikaan ja meillä on pitänyt kiirettä. Lauantaina minua haastateltiin Vauva-lehteen. Kiitokset Titalle ja Teijalle! Jutun teko oli hauskaa, mutta poseeraaminen on kyllä rankkaa työtä. Paremmin viihdyn kameran toisella puolella.
Keittiö on melkein valmis. Hyllyjä, listoja ja muuta pientä uupuu vielä, mutta aloimme jo muuttaa kamoja sinne. Suunnitelmissa olisi vielä yksi pieni remppa ennen H-hetkeä, nimittäin tuleva vaipanvaihtohuone. Peukut pystyyn että ehditään!
Saimme myös viimein vaihdettua vanhan öljylämmityksen maalämpöön. Vanha öljykattila oli vuodelta 1979, joten sen oli aikakin lähteä. Minusta on mahtavaa, että nyt talo on huomattavasti ympäristöystävällisempi. Varsinkin kun vaihdoimme sähkön Ekösähköön. Ei ydinvoimaa meidän taloon, kiitos.
Niin ja ensilumikin tuli, mahtavaa :)
Haiku by Pentik

I fell in love with these Haiku cushion covers by Pentik, and thought it was time to introduce some darker colors to our living room. For autumn, you know. They are 100% silk, and only afterwards did I realize I have no idea if they can be washed. So when the baby arrives (one month left til the due date!) I might just have to keep a safe distance between him/her and the cushions.
The woollen shawl is also from the Haiku range.

Rakastuin aivan täysin näihin Haiku-tyynynpäällisiin Pentikiltä. Koska olen hyvä keksimään syitä shoppailuun, päättelin että niitten avulla on hyvä tuoda syksyn värejä muuten niin kesäiseen olohuoneeseen. Tyynynpäälliset ovat 100% silkkiä, ja vasta jälkeenpäin tajusin etten tiedä miten niitä voi pestä. Täytyy varmaan vain pitää turvallinen etäisyys vauvan ja tyynyjen välillä. Sitten kun vaavi tulee, laskettu aika on kuukauden päästä!
Method dish soap

I’ve been a devoted user of method hand soaps since I first found them, so when I heard from Vihreä talo that they now also have a dish wash liquid, of course I had to test it. I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first how it would manage our dirty dishes, being biodegradable and all. But it cleaned our greasy lasagna dishes just perfect. Plus the natural citrus scent is much nicer than your average dish soap’s, so it makes the whole washing up (not my favorite chore) much nicer.

Olen ollut vannoutunut methodin saippuoiden käyttäjä siitä asti kun ne löysin. Joten kun kuulin Vihreästä talosta, että heiltä on tullut myös tiskiaine, täytyi heti päästä testaamaan. Täytyy myöntää, että olin aluksi vähän skeptinen sen pesutehosta. Mutta ainakin meidän rasvaisista lasagneastioista se selvisi aivan kirkkaasti. Klementiinin tuoksu oli sitä paitsi paljon parempi kuin tavallisen tiskiaineen, jolloin koko tiskaaminen (ei lempipuuhiani) on paljon mukavampaa.
Anthropologie Lighting

I was flicking through the latest Anthropologie catalogue and fell for these lamp bases. Unfortunately I was able to find them only on the US site, not on the European, but perhaps they will appear for us European customers too.
Anyway, they make my imagination run wild with DIY ideas… The things you could use as lamp bases! For example, I once found a gorgeous vintage metallic roll made for printing wallpaper on Etsy, but didn’t buy it because I didn’t know what to do with it. It would have made a perfect lamp base. Now I regret. You should always, ALWAYS get things that speak to you. Eventually they will find their true purpose.

Uusimmassa Anthropologien kuvastossa oli aivan upeita lampunjalkoja. Ei tosin aivan minun budjettiin istuvia, mutta ei niitä muutenkaan näytä vielä saavan Euroopan Anthropologielta, jenkkiversiosta vain. Mutta ne saavat mielikuvituksen laukkaamaan villisti DIY-ideoiden kimpussa. Mitä kaikkea voisikaan käyttää lampunjalaksi.
Joskus aikaa sitten törmäsin Etsyssä tosi kauniiseen metalliseen vintage-tapettipainorullaan. Siis sellaiseen jolla painetaan tapettiin kuviot. En ostanut sitä kun en tiennyt sille käyttöä. No nyt kaduttaa. Siitä olisi saanut loistavan lampunjalan. Pitäisi aina, AINA ostaa kaikki joka puhuttelee. Kyllä ne lopulta löytävät oikean tarkoituksensa.
